The two main technological pathways for AR glasses released in 2023 are:
  • One is evolving from lightweight to all-weather, progressing from "like regular glasses" to "are regular glasses." This places more extreme demands on display components: extreme miniaturization, extreme brightness, and extreme power efficiency. Devices released in the second half of 2023, such as Thunderbird X2, INMO Go, MYUV and its development version, Meta Lens S3, all adopt integrated designs, equipped with Micro LED display screens and diffractive waveguide modules.
  • The other type emphasizes high-definition and wide field of view (FOV) for augmented reality glasses, catering to immersive movie-watching and gaming experiences. Examples include Xreal Air 2, Rokid Max, Xrany X1, etc. They all feature Micro OLED+BirdBath/freeform optics modules. Due to higher computational power requirements, they generally adopt a modular design, coupled with a control box for usage. Additionally, most of them incorporate electrochromic lenses to enhance the fusion experience between the virtual and real worlds.
VR headsets do not have as stringent requirements on size and weight as AR glasses, but they demand higher specifications in terms of computational power, resolution, FOV (field of view), facial recognition, gesture interaction, haptic feedback, spatial audio, heat dissipation, and battery life. The goal is to construct a fully virtual metaverse world. The integration of VST (Virtual See-Through) technology provides VR with a one-touch return-to-reality function.

AR/VR represents two distinct technological solutions within the current technological landscape, with the ultimate goal of building a deeply integrated metaverse world blending virtual and real elements. In 2023, the AR/VR industry has shifted from conceptual hype to a more sober focus on hardware. Looking at the current trajectory of technological development, the hardware forms of AR/VR/MR are still in the early stages. As AR/VR hardware continues to advance, facilitating a deeper fusion of reality and virtuality, the experiences will become richer. This evolution demands more innovative materials and technologies to meet the market's demands for lighter, clearer, and more diverse solutions.
To enhance hardware development and drive the progress of the AR/VR industry, Aibang plans to host the 5th AR/VR/MR Industry Forum on June 14, 2024, in Shenzhen. This forum will invite companies involved in terminal branding, overall device design, assembly, optical modules, display solutions, cameras, lenses, audio solutions, sensors, structural components, raw materials, film materials, equipment, interaction design, cooling modules, battery modules, and more. It aims to bring together cutting-edge technologies and industry professionals, providing a platform for the industry to converge and inviting companies from various sectors to participate, collaborate, and exchange ideas for the mutual advancement of the industry.
